Warning: spoilers for The Walking Dead Season 7 Episode 2 entitled “The Well”.
On tonight’s episode of The Walking Dead, we’re introduced to King Ezekial (played by Khary Payton), the eccentric leader of the community known as The Kingdom. After her hard fought battle with The Saviors in The Walking Dead Season 6 finale, Carol is rescued by Morgan and later discovered by a few of The Kingdom’s men. As we saw in tonight’s episode, Carol is brought back to the community to recover from her injuries.
Early on in the episode, Morgan brings Carol to meet King Ezekial and his tiger, Shiva. Echoing similar plot lines from last season, the whole scenario is a bit too much for Carol and she once again plans to leave to live out her days on her own. However, after chatting with Carol one-on-one, Ezekial convinces her to live in a house on the outskirts of town. At the very end of the episode, we see Ezekial show up at Carol’s door, fruit in hand. How romantic.
As many comic book fans remember, Ezekial does get romantic with a member of Rick’s group. However, this role is given to Michonne in the comics. In fact, Ezekial and Michonne’s relationship lasts for quite a long time in the graphic novels – all the way up until the end of the All Out War arc. Since Michonne and Rick are just starting to explore their blossoming relationship in the show, where does this leave Ezekial? The most obvious of choices at this point would be Carol.
In the episode, Ezekial drops his king facade and talks to Carol like a real person. He is able to see through Carol’s “innocent” act and knows that this isn’t the person she actually is. He explains that often times we must continue to put on a facade when people are looking towards you for answers. In other words, Carol and Ezekial are able to relate since they’ve both been doing the same thing in order to survive. He confides in Carol, informing her that she is the only person that knows of his true past. Viewers learn that he was a zookeeper and Shiva was one of the last remaining animals alive when the apocalypse started. Because of a scenario in the past where Ezekial helped an injured Shiva, the tiger has been by his side ever since.
Is Carol Ezekial’s new Shiva? Guess we’ll just have to wait and find out. In the meantime, let us know what you think of this possible relationship between Ezekial and Carol. Are you now shipping Cazekial? Sound off with your thoughts in the comments section below.
