AMC Combating The Walking Dead Piracy and Pre-Broadcast Leaks

New watermarking technology aims to reduce the amount of pre-broadcast leaks.

In a world filled with The Walking Dead spoilers, AMC is attempting to combat this growing epidemic by deploying new digital watermarking technology to help prevent piracy of their original series.

What does this entail exactly? AMC is now embedding digital watermarks into episodes of The Walking Dead, Better Call Saul, and Humans at the production and distribution level. While this doesn’t necessary prevent leaks, the goal is for AMC to figure out who is responsible for the leak, if and when it happens.

In an official statement from the network, AMC’s chief technology officer, Steve Pontillo, said, “It is paramount for us to protect our assets when they are at their most valuable. This enhanced content security is a powerful deterrent against piracy and protects our revenue and that of our distribution partners.”

The system should help prevent pre-broadcast leaks, however, it does little to prevent post-broadcast piracy by consumers, which is a problem in and of itself.

What does this mean for fans that enjoy reading spoilers prior to episodes airing? Might this deter those that work in post-production or journalists who receive screeners from leaking episode details? Do you enjoy reading spoilers or do you feel they’re an insult to the actors who work hard to keep story lines secret? Sound off with your thoughts in the comments section below!
